What Does Code A014_F Mean?

Fault code A014_F on the Rheem R802VA means the flame sensor is detecting an undesired flame when the IFC has commanded the gas valve closed. The IFC will initiate a one-hour soft lockout when this condition is detected. Because flame should not exist when the gas valve is off, this fault indicates a potentially dangerous situation.

The most likely cause is a gas valve stuck in the open position, allowing gas to continue flowing and burning after the valve is commanded to close. A relay on the control board that drives the gas valve can also weld shut due to electrical arcing, keeping voltage applied to the valve continuously. Less commonly, a faulty flame sensor circuit may be generating a false flame signal when no actual flame exists.

Regardless of the cause, this fault must not be ignored. If the gas valve is truly stuck open, uncontrolled combustion or gas accumulation could occur. The furnace should be shut down and the gas supply turned off at the manual shutoff valve until a technician has diagnosed the root cause.
