How Trane Furnaces Display Error Codes

The Integrated Furnace Control (IFC) has a diagnostic LED that communicates furnace status and error conditions through flash patterns. A slow flash indicates normal standby, a fast flash indicates an active call for heat, and numbered flash sequences (2 through 9) indicate specific fault conditions.

This site covers 2 Trane furnace models and a total of 24 error code entries. Select your model below to see the full code list with causes and repair guidance.

DIY-Friendly Trane Error Codes

These error codes on Trane furnaces are commonly resolved by a careful homeowner without a service call — typically by cleaning the flame sensor, checking filters, or inspecting the exhaust vent. Always turn off power and gas before attempting any repair.

High-Severity Trane Error Codes

These codes indicate conditions that prevent normal furnace operation or involve safety-relevant components such as the gas valve, heat exchanger, or inducer motor. Most require a licensed HVAC technician to diagnose and repair safely.

About Trane

The Trane brand traces its origins to 1885 when James Trane, a Norwegian immigrant, opened a plumbing and pipe-fitting shop in La Crosse, Wisconsin. His son Reuben joined the business in 1910, and together they incorporated The Trane Company in 1913, shifting focus toward heating products. Reuben's 1923 invention of the convector radiator was a breakthrough that displaced cast-iron radiators of the era, and the company introduced its first air conditioning unit in 1931. American Standard Companies acquired Trane in 1984. After American Standard dissolved in 2007, Ingersoll Rand acquired Trane, completing the deal in June 2008. In 2020, Ingersoll Rand spun off its non-refrigeration businesses and rebranded as Trane Technologies, refocusing the company exclusively on HVAC and transport refrigeration.
