Lennox EL296UHV Error Code dF: Defrost Mode
What Does Code dF Mean?
The letters dF on the Lennox EL296UHV seven-segment display indicate that the system is performing a defrost cycle on the outdoor heat pump unit. During cold weather, moisture in the air can freeze on the outdoor coil, reducing the heat pump's efficiency. The system automatically reverses the refrigerant flow to warm the outdoor coil and melt the accumulated ice.
During a defrost cycle, you may notice the outdoor unit's fan stops while the compressor continues running. The system may briefly blow cool air from the indoor vents because the heat pump is temporarily running in cooling mode to defrost the outdoor coil. Some systems activate auxiliary or emergency heat during defrost to prevent cold air from reaching the living space.
A defrost cycle typically lasts 5 to 15 minutes and occurs automatically based on timer or demand-based controls. No action is needed. The system will return to normal heating operation once the outdoor coil is clear of ice.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a licensed HVAC technician if:
- The system runs defrost cycles very frequently (every 30 minutes or less)
- The outdoor unit remains heavily iced even after defrost cycles complete
- The system stays in defrost mode for more than 20 minutes
