Lennox EL296UHV Error Code E 207: Hot Surface Ignitor Sensed Open
What Does Code E 207 Mean?
Error code E207 on the Lennox EL296UHV indicates that the hot surface ignitor (HSI) has been sensed as an open circuit. The control board checks the ignitor's resistance before each ignition attempt, and an open circuit means the ignitor element has broken — it cannot conduct electricity and therefore cannot glow to ignite the gas.
Hot surface ignitors are fragile ceramic components that degrade over time with repeated heating and cooling cycles. A typical ignitor lasts 3 to 7 years depending on usage. They can also crack from physical impact during maintenance, or from voltage spikes. Once cracked, the carbon element inside breaks and the circuit opens.
The furnace will not attempt to ignite with an open ignitor circuit, so there is no heat until the ignitor is replaced. A technician should measure the ignitor's resistance to confirm it is open or out of the specified range listed in the installation manual, then replace it with the correct part for the EL296UHV.
