Lennox EL296UHV Error Code E 294: Combustion Air Inducer Over Current
What Does Code E 294 Mean?
Error code E294 on the Lennox EL296UHV indicates that the combustion air inducer motor is drawing more electrical current than the control board considers safe. The board monitors the inducer current to detect motor problems before they cause a complete failure or create a safety hazard.
The inducer motor is responsible for pulling combustion gases through the heat exchanger and out the exhaust vent. When the motor's bearings wear down, the increased friction causes the motor to draw more amps to maintain speed. A buildup of debris or condensation in the inducer housing can also increase the load on the motor, as can a partially blocked exhaust vent that forces the motor to work harder.
The error clears after the inducer current is sensed to be in range following the soft lockout or a power reset. However, if the motor bearings are worn, the problem will worsen over time. A technician should check the inducer motor bearings, measure the amp draw, inspect the wiring, and replace the inducer assembly if it does not meet performance standards.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a licensed HVAC technician if:
- The inducer motor sounds louder, rougher, or different than normal
- E294 keeps returning after the lockout clears
- You notice vibration from the furnace when the inducer runs
- The inducer motor needs professional testing and likely replacement
