What Does Code 21 Mean?

Status code 21 on the Carrier 58MVP indicates a gas heating lockout — and unlike most other lockout codes, this one will NOT automatically reset. The furnace has detected a condition that the control board considers too serious to retry, specifically related to the gas valve circuit.

The two primary causes are a mis-wired gas valve and a defective valve relay on the control board. A mis-wired gas valve means the gas valve connections do not match the control board's expected wiring configuration, which can occur after service work or a gas valve replacement. A defective valve relay means the control board's internal switching mechanism for the gas valve has failed.

To reset the furnace after this code, power must be physically interrupted — either by turning off the circuit breaker or the furnace disconnect switch. However, simply resetting power without fixing the underlying problem will cause the lockout to reoccur. A technician needs to verify the gas valve wiring against the furnace wiring diagram and test the control board's valve relay for proper operation.
