What Does Code 14 Mean?

Status code 14 on the Carrier 58MVP indicates an ignition lockout. The furnace failed to ignite or prove a flame after multiple attempts, so it has locked itself out as a safety measure. The control will automatically attempt to reset after 3 hours.

This lockout is the result of repeated code 34 (Ignition Proving Failure) events. Each time the furnace tries to ignite, the hot surface igniter heats up, the gas valve opens, and the flame sensor checks for flame. If flame is not detected or is lost, the system retries up to three more times. If all attempts fail, the system escalates to this code 14 lockout.

The most common cause is a dirty or oxidized flame sensor that cannot detect the flame even though it may be present. A failed hot surface igniter that no longer glows hot enough to light the gas is another frequent cause. Gas supply issues (valve turned off, low pressure) can also prevent ignition.
