What Does Code 15 Mean?

Status code 15 on the Carrier 58MVP is a blower motor lockout that occurs when the ECM blower motor fails to reach 250 RPM or cannot establish communication with the control board within 30 seconds of being turned on — and this happens in two successive heating cycles.

The 58MVP uses a variable-speed ECM motor that communicates digitally with the furnace control. When this communication link fails repeatedly, the control board locks out to prevent the furnace from firing without confirmed airflow through the heat exchanger. Operating the burners without adequate airflow could cause overheating and trigger limit switch trips.

The furnace will attempt to auto-reset after 3 hours. However, if the motor itself has failed, the lockout will simply repeat. The most common resolution is replacing the blower motor, though in some cases the issue may be a loose wiring connection between the motor module and the control board. A technician should inspect the motor wiring harness and test the motor before recommending replacement.
