What Does Code 15 Mean?

Status code 15 on the Carrier 58MVC indicates a blower motor lockout. The control board detected that the blower failed to reach 250 RPM or failed to establish communication within 30 seconds of being turned on, and this occurred in two successive heating cycles. The control will auto-reset after 3 hours, but if the underlying issue is not resolved, the lockout will recur.

The Carrier 58MVC uses a variable-speed ECM (electronically commutated motor) blower that communicates digitally with the control board. This communication allows the control to precisely manage airflow for different heating stages. When the motor cannot start, reach the requested speed, or maintain its communication link, the control board cannot confirm adequate airflow and shuts down for safety.

A defective blower motor is the most likely cause. ECM motors have built-in electronic modules that can fail independently of the motor itself. A communication failure between the blower motor and the control board — caused by loose connectors, corroded pins, or damaged wiring — is the second most common cause. Diagnosis requires an HVAC technician with the tools to test the motor and its communication circuit.
