What Does Code 21 Mean?

Status code 21 on the Carrier 58MVC indicates a gas heating lockout that will NOT automatically reset. This is one of the most serious codes this furnace can display, as it points to a problem with the gas valve control circuit. The furnace will remain locked out until a technician repairs the issue and manually cycles power to clear the lockout.

The two causes specified for this code are a mis-wired gas valve and a defective control board valve relay. A mis-wired gas valve means the electrical connections between the control board and the gas valve are incorrect — wires may be on the wrong terminals or a connection may be loose. This can cause the valve to behave unpredictably, opening or failing to close at the wrong times.

A defective valve relay means the switching component on the control board that sends power to the gas valve has failed. If the relay is stuck open, the gas valve cannot receive the signal to open. If it is stuck closed, the valve could receive power when it should not. Because both conditions involve the safety-critical gas delivery system, the permanent lockout prevents any furnace operation until the problem is professionally resolved.
