What Does Code 21 Mean?

Status code 21 on the Carrier 59SC2B is a gas heating lockout that will NOT automatically reset. This distinguishes it from most other lockout codes on this furnace, which auto-reset after a set period. Code 21 means the control board detected a condition serious enough to require manual intervention before the furnace can operate again.

The two known causes are a mis-wired gas valve and a defective valve relay on the control board. If the gas valve was recently replaced or serviced, incorrect wiring is the most likely culprit. If no recent service was performed, the valve relay on the control board may have failed — this relay controls the electrical signal that opens and closes the gas valve.

Power must be interrupted (breaker off or disconnect switch) to clear this lockout, but doing so without addressing the root cause will result in the lockout reoccurring. A qualified technician needs to compare the gas valve wiring to the furnace's wiring diagram and test the control board's valve relay output.
