Carrier 59SC5A Error Code 21: Gas Heating Lockout
What Does Code 21 Mean?
Status code 21 on the Carrier 59SC5A is a gas heating lockout that does NOT automatically reset. This is one of the few lockout conditions on the 59SC5A that requires manual power interruption to clear, and even then, the lockout will reoccur if the underlying problem is not fixed.
This code is triggered by issues in the gas valve circuit — specifically a mis-wired gas valve or a defective valve relay on the control board. A mis-wired gas valve means the electrical connections to the gas valve do not match the wiring diagram, which can happen after valve replacement or service work. A defective valve relay means the control board's internal switching mechanism for the gas valve has failed electrically.
Because this involves the gas valve control circuit, there is no homeowner-level fix. A qualified technician must verify the gas valve wiring against the 59SC5A wiring diagram, test the valve relay output on the control board, and replace the faulty component. Power cycling alone will not resolve the issue.
