Carrier 59SC5A Error Code Rapid Flashing: Reversed Line Voltage Polarity
What Does Code Rapid Flashing Mean?
A rapidly flashing amber LED on the Carrier 59SC5A indicates that the 115-volt line voltage polarity is reversed. The control board checks the orientation of the hot and neutral wires at power-up, and if they are swapped, it signals this fault and restricts furnace operation.
Correct polarity is critical for the furnace's flame sensing circuit, which uses the voltage difference between the hot wire and the grounded burner to detect flame. With reversed polarity, the flame sensor cannot produce a reliable signal, making safe ignition control impossible. If the 59SC5A is part of a twinned furnace installation, the twinning kit instructions should be consulted, as out-of-phase transformers between the paired units can also produce this condition.
An electrician or HVAC technician needs to check the wiring from the breaker panel to the furnace disconnect and then to the furnace itself. The hot wire (typically black) must connect to the L1 terminal and the neutral (typically white) to L2/N. Once corrected, the furnace will operate normally.
Common Causes
