Payne PG8MAA Error Code Rapid Flashing: Reversed Line Voltage Polarity
What Does Code Rapid Flashing Mean?
A rapidly flashing LED on the Payne PG8MAA indicates that the 115VAC line voltage polarity is reversed. The hot (L1) and neutral (L2) wires are connected backwards at the furnace's power supply. The control board detects this reversal and alerts you by rapidly flashing the status LED.
Reversed polarity is a wiring safety issue that can affect the furnace's ability to properly ground the flame sensing circuit. The flame sensor relies on correct polarity to detect flame current — with reversed polarity, the furnace may fail to sense the flame even when it is present, leading to ignition failures and lockouts.
If the furnace is part of a twinned (dual furnace) installation, the polarity issue may be related to the twinning kit wiring. In all cases, this is a high-voltage electrical issue that must be corrected by a qualified electrician or HVAC technician. Do not attempt to swap wires yourself, as incorrect handling of line voltage wiring is dangerous.
Common Causes
| Cause | Likelihood | DIY? |
|---|---|---|
| Hot and neutral wires reversed at the furnace electrical connection | Most common | ✗ Call a pro → |
| Incorrect wiring in twinned furnace setup | Uncommon | ✗ Call a pro → |
When to Call a Professional
Contact a licensed HVAC technician if:
- The LED is flashing rapidly — reversed polarity requires professional correction
- The furnace was recently installed or had electrical work done
- You have a twinned furnace setup and the code appeared on one or both units
