Payne PG8MAA Error Code 24: Secondary Voltage Fuse Is Open
What Does Code 24 Mean?
Status code 24 on the Payne PG8MAA indicates that the secondary voltage fuse is open (blown). This fuse protects the 24VAC low-voltage circuit that powers the thermostat, gas valve, and other control components. When it blows, the furnace loses all low-voltage control and cannot operate.
The most common cause is a short circuit in the thermostat wiring. This can happen when thermostat wires touch each other (bare spots in the insulation), when a wire is pinched or cut during construction or remodeling, or when a thermostat is incorrectly wired during installation. Even momentary contact between the wrong thermostat terminals can blow the fuse instantly.
To isolate the short, a technician will typically disconnect the thermostat wires at the furnace and check if the fuse blows with just the furnace board alone. If it does not blow, the short is in the thermostat wiring. The technician will trace and repair the short circuit, then replace the fuse. Simply replacing the fuse without finding the short will result in the new fuse blowing again.
Common Causes
When to Call a Professional
Contact a licensed HVAC technician if:
- The furnace is completely unresponsive and shows code 24
- The fuse keeps blowing after being replaced
- The code appeared after thermostat replacement or wiring work
