Carrier 58MVC Error Code 24: Secondary Voltage Fuse Is Open
What Does Code 24 Mean?
Status code 24 on the Carrier 58MVC indicates that the secondary voltage fuse — the small fuse on the control board that protects the 24-volt circuit — has blown. This fuse safeguards the low-voltage side of the system, which includes the thermostat wiring, transformer secondary, and connections to accessories like humidifiers or zone dampers.
The most common cause of a blown 24V fuse is a short circuit somewhere in the thermostat wiring. This can happen when thermostat wires are pinched behind a wall plate, when bare wires touch each other during thermostat installation, or when wire insulation has worn through. Rodent damage to wiring is another frequent culprit.
While the fuse itself is inexpensive, simply replacing it without finding the short will cause it to blow again immediately. A technician needs to trace the thermostat wiring to locate the short, repair it, and then replace the fuse. Attempting to use a higher-rated fuse as a workaround can damage the control board or transformer.
