Carrier 58MVC Error Code Status Code 12: Blower On After Power Up
What Does Code Status Code 12 Mean?
When furnace power is interrupted and restored while the thermostat is calling for heat (or during the blower on-delay period), the 58MVC control runs the blower for 90 seconds as a safety measure before restarting the heating cycle. This is normal protective behavior and code 12 simply records that it happened.
However, if you see code 12 repeating every couple of minutes, the control is detecting what looks like repeated power interruptions — which is usually caused by a direct short circuit somewhere in the low-voltage wiring. The most common culprits are a short in the pressure switch circuits, gas valve (GV) wiring, throttling valve (TV) wiring, or the humidifier coil. These shorts cause the control to cycle repeatedly.
A single occurrence of code 12 after a power outage or breaker trip requires no action. The furnace should resume normal operation on its own. Repeated occurrences point to an electrical wiring issue that requires professional diagnosis.
Common Causes
When to Call a Professional
Contact a licensed HVAC technician if:
- Code 12 repeats every few minutes without any actual power outage
- The furnace keeps cycling on and off without completing a heating cycle
- You hear the blower start and stop repeatedly in short intervals
- There was no recent power outage but code 12 appeared
- The code appears alongside other fault codes such as code 31 or code 32
