Payne PG8MAA Error Code 45: Control Circuitry Lockout
What Does Code 45 Mean?
Status code 45 on the Payne PG8MAA indicates a control circuitry lockout. The control board has detected an internal malfunction in one of its critical safety circuits and has locked itself out for one hour. After the lockout period, the system will attempt to restart automatically.
Three types of internal failures can trigger this code: a gas valve relay that is stuck open (unable to close to energize the gas valve), a flame sense circuit failure (the board cannot process flame sensor readings), or a software check error (the microprocessor detected a logic fault). All three point to a control board that is beginning to fail.
You can attempt to reset the furnace by turning the power off for 30 seconds and back on. However, if code 45 returns after the reset or reappears within a few heating cycles, the control board is defective and needs to be replaced. This is not a repair that can be done by a homeowner — the board must be matched to the specific furnace model and configured properly by a technician.
Common Causes
When to Call a Professional
Contact a licensed HVAC technician if:
- Code 45 appears more than once after power cycling
- The furnace locks out repeatedly with code 45
- The furnace will not operate reliably and code 45 is in the stored history
