Payne PG8MAA Error Code 21: Gas Heating Lockout
What Does Code 21 Mean?
Status code 21 on the Payne PG8MAA indicates a gas heating lockout that will NOT automatically reset. Unlike other lockout codes that clear after a waiting period, code 21 requires a manual power cycle to reset the furnace. This code points to a fundamental problem with the gas valve circuit.
The two primary causes are a mis-wired gas valve and a defective control board with a failed valve relay. If the gas valve wiring was disturbed during recent service work or installation, the connections may be incorrect. If no work was recently performed, the control board's internal gas valve relay may have failed.
Do not attempt to rewire the gas valve or troubleshoot the control board yourself. Gas valve wiring errors can create dangerous conditions where gas flows uncontrolled. Call a qualified HVAC technician to diagnose and repair the issue. To reset the lockout after the repair is made, the technician will need to cycle the furnace power off and back on.
