Carrier 58MVP Error Code 22: Abnormal Flame-Proving Signal
What Does Code 22 Mean?
Status code 22 on the Carrier 58MVP indicates that the flame sensor is proving a flame while the gas valve is de-energized. In a properly functioning furnace, no flame should exist when the gas valve is closed. The furnace responds by keeping the inducer motor running continuously to vent any gas until the fault condition clears.
This code points to a gas valve that is either leaking internally or stuck in the open position. A leaking gas valve allows a small amount of gas to seep past the valve seat, which can be ignited by residual heat. A stuck-open valve allows full gas flow when none should be present. Both situations represent serious safety concerns.
Do not attempt to continue operating the furnace or diagnose this issue yourself. Turn off the gas supply to the furnace using the manual shutoff valve on the gas line, then shut off furnace power. Contact a qualified HVAC technician who can test the gas valve for internal leaks and replace it if necessary.
