Rheem R96VA0702317MSA Error Code 60: Blower Fault - Blower Can Still Run
What Does Code 60 Mean?
Error code 60 on the Rheem R96V indicates a non-critical blower fault. The blower motor is still running, and all furnace operations — heating, cooling, and fan — continue as normal. You may not notice any difference in performance.
The ECM (electronically commutated motor) blower in the R96V constantly monitors its own operating conditions. When the static pressure in the ductwork is higher than optimal, the motor has to work harder to move the same amount of air. Code 60 means the motor has detected this elevated effort but can still compensate and continue running.
While this code does not cause an immediate problem, it indicates that airflow through the system is restricted. The most common cause is a dirty or clogged air filter. If left unaddressed, the added strain on the blower motor can lead to premature wear, reduced efficiency, and potentially a more serious fault code like 61 (blower motor cannot run) or 66 (blower cutback).

How to Fix It: Replace the Air Filter and Check Airflow
What You'll Need
- Replacement air filter (correct size for your system) 🛒 Find at FiltersFast · 🛒 Find at Amazon
- Flashlight
Steps
- Turn off electrical power at the breaker or power switch AND shut off the gas supply valve Locate the furnace circuit breaker and flip it to OFF, or use the power switch on or near the furnace. Turn the manual gas shutoff valve to the OFF position (perpendicular to the pipe). If you smell gas at any point, leave the house immediately and call your gas company from outside.
- Locate and remove the air filter The air filter is typically in the return air duct near the furnace or inside the blower compartment. Slide the old filter out and note the size printed on its frame.
- Inspect and replace the filter If the filter is visibly dirty or has been in place for more than 90 days, replace it with a new filter of the same size. Insert the new filter with the airflow arrow pointing toward the furnace.
- Check all supply and return vents Walk through your home and confirm all supply registers and return air grilles are fully open and not blocked by furniture, rugs, drapes, or other objects. Even one or two blocked vents can significantly increase static pressure.
- Restore power and gas, then test Turn the gas supply valve to ON and restore electrical power. Set your thermostat to call for heat or cooling and let the system run for a full cycle. Code 60 may clear on its own once airflow is restored to normal levels.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a licensed HVAC technician if:
- Code 60 persists after replacing the filter and opening all vents
- You notice weak airflow from supply vents even with a clean filter
- The blower motor makes unusual humming, buzzing, or grinding noises
- The code escalates to code 61 (blower cannot run) or code 66 (blower cutback)
- Your ductwork has never been professionally evaluated for proper sizing
