Rheem R96VA0702317MSA Error Code 57: High Pressure Switch Open, Inducer on High Speed

TL;DR
Code 57 means the high pressure switch didn't close during high-speed inducer operation. If the low pressure switch is still working, the furnace may switch to low-fire. Full high-stage heating is disabled. Check for vent blockages outside.

What Does Code 57 Mean?

A code 57 on the Rheem R96VA0702317MSA is a critical fault indicating the high pressure switch failed to close when the inducer motor was running at high speed. This fault can occur at any point during the high-fire heat call after the pre-purge and blower-on delays are complete. When the high pressure switch opens during high-fire operation but the low pressure switch remains closed, the IFC will attempt to switch to low-fire heating to try to satisfy the thermostat call rather than shutting down completely. This means the furnace may still provide some heat, but at reduced capacity.

The high pressure switch requires a higher negative pressure to close than the low pressure switch, making it more susceptible to partial venting obstructions. Physical blockages at exterior vent terminations — ice, snow, bird nests, or debris — are the most common cause. Flue vent systems that exceed the maximum length or elbow count for this model, a failing or disconnected inducer motor, disconnected or split pressure switch hoses, or a faulty high pressure switch itself are other causes. High altitude installations may also struggle to generate sufficient negative pressure for the high stage.

Check the exterior vent terminations for visible blockages first. If vents are clear and the problem recurs, a technician must inspect the full venting system and pressure switch circuit.
