Lennox SLP98UHV Error Code E 312: Restricted Airflow - Cooling/Fan Mode

TL;DR
Your Lennox SLP98UHV's blower is running at reduced speed in cooling or fan mode due to restricted airflow. Replace the air filter and ensure all vents are open.

What Does Code E 312 Mean?

Error code E312 on the Lennox SLP98UHV indicates restricted airflow during cooling or continuous fan mode. The indoor blower motor is running at a reduced speed (cutback mode) to protect itself from damage caused by operating outside its designed parameters.

The SLP98UHV uses a variable-speed ECM blower motor with pre-set speed and torque limiters. These limiters are designed to protect the motor when total external static pressure exceeds the designed range (0 to 0.8 inches water column). When the motor hits these limits due to restricted airflow, it automatically slows down rather than burning itself out trying to push air through the restriction.

The most common cause is a dirty air filter. During cooling mode, the blower runs at higher speeds than heating mode, making it more sensitive to filter restrictions. Other causes include blocked supply or return vents, collapsed ductwork, or an undersized duct system. While E312 occurs specifically during cooling or fan mode, the same airflow restriction will likely cause E311 during heating mode as well.

How to Fix It: Replace the Air Filter and Restore Airflow

⚠ Safety First
Always turn off the furnace at the power switch or breaker and shut off the gas supply before beginning. Do not proceed if you smell gas — leave the area and call your gas company immediately.

What You'll Need

Steps

  1. Turn off electrical power at the breaker and shut off the gas supply valve Locate the furnace circuit breaker and flip it to OFF. Turn the gas shutoff valve to the OFF position (handle perpendicular to the pipe) as a safety precaution, even though this is an airflow issue.
  2. Replace the air filter Remove the current air filter from the blower compartment or return duct. If it is dirty, replace it with a new filter of the correct size. Make sure the airflow direction arrow points toward the blower. High-MERV filters (MERV 13+) create significantly more resistance and are a common cause of E312 during cooling mode when blower speeds are higher.
  3. Open all supply registers and return grilles Walk through every room and ensure all supply registers and return air grilles are fully open and unobstructed. During cooling mode, adequate airflow is critical both for the blower motor's protection and for proper evaporator coil performance.
  4. Check the evaporator coil (if accessible) If you can safely view the evaporator coil (A-coil) above the furnace, check for visible dust or debris buildup on its surface. A dirty evaporator coil acts like a second filter and significantly restricts airflow. Do not attempt to clean it yourself — this requires a technician.
  5. Restore power and gas, then test Turn the gas supply valve to ON and flip the circuit breaker to ON. Run the system in cooling or fan-only mode and monitor for the E312 code.
How to Verify
The blower should run at normal speed in cooling or fan mode without the E312 code appearing. Airflow from supply registers should feel strong and consistent. If the blower still sounds like it is running slowly, there may be a deeper restriction.
