Payne PG95ESA Error Code 45: Control Circuitry Lockout

TL;DR
The control board has locked itself out due to an internal circuitry fault, repeated flame failures, or a stuck open gas valve relay. It auto-resets after 1 hour, but if the code returns, the board needs replacement.

What Does Code 45 Mean?

Code 45 on the Payne PG95ESA is a control circuitry lockout — the integrated furnace control board has detected an internal fault in its own logic or sensing circuitry. The board automatically attempts to reset after a 1-hour lockout period. Cycling power (turning off 115VAC and restoring it) can also clear the lockout temporarily, but the code will repeat until the underlying cause is resolved.

The lockout can be triggered by a flame signal failure, where the microprocessor detects an inconsistency in the flame-proving circuit. A gas valve relay stuck open — allowing the valve control circuit to remain active when it should not be — can also cause the board to flag its own logic as suspect. Additionally, internal check errors in the board's firmware can trigger code 45 when a software checksum fails.

Because this fault originates in the board's internal circuitry, there is no field repair available. The manufacturer's troubleshooting guide explicitly states that if the code repeats after the auto-reset, the control board must be replaced. Do not attempt to repair or modify the control board.
