Payne PG95ESA Error Code 23: Pressure Switch Did Not Open
What Does Code 23 Mean?
Status code 23 on the Payne PG95ESA indicates the pressure switch did not open as expected during the furnace operating sequence. The pressure switch is a safety component that monitors the negative pressure created by the inducer motor — it should open (break contact) at specific points in the heating cycle to confirm the inducer is operating within normal parameters.
Code 23 appears when the pressure switch remains closed at a point when it should be open. The three causes identified in the service documentation are a pressure switch stuck in the closed position, a clogged pressure switch port, and a clogged pressure switch hose or tubing connecting the switch to the inducer housing.
A stuck closed switch may be caused by a mechanical failure inside the switch itself, or by debris or moisture blocking the port. Clogged tubing prevents the pressure change from reaching the switch diaphragm, keeping it closed even when pressure conditions have changed. Diagnosis requires checking the switch and tubing with the power off and inspecting port openings for obstruction.

When to Call a Professional
Contact a licensed HVAC technician if:
- Contact a technician to inspect and test the pressure switch — the furnace will not complete a heating cycle with this fault active
- If the switch is found faulty, it must be replaced with an OEM-specified component
