Payne PG95ESA Error Code Rapid Flashing: Reversed Line Voltage Polarity
What Does Code Rapid Flashing Mean?
When the amber LED on the Payne PG95ESA control board flashes rapidly without a pause, the integrated furnace control has detected that line voltage polarity is reversed at the furnace power supply. The hot and neutral wires are swapped — 115VAC is present on the neutral terminal instead of the hot terminal.
Reversed polarity prevents the furnace from operating because the control board cannot safely complete the 24VAC transformer phasing. The furnace will not attempt to heat until the polarity is corrected. The fault typically originates at the furnace disconnect box or the branch circuit breaker panel, where a wiring error was made during installation or a previous service visit.
Correction requires verifying which conductor is hot with a voltage meter and swapping the wires at the disconnect or junction box to restore proper polarity. Because this involves 115VAC line voltage, the work must be done with power off and verified by a qualified electrician.

When to Call a Professional
Contact a licensed HVAC technician if:
- Call a licensed electrician or HVAC technician to correct the reversed polarity — line voltage work must be done safely with power off
- Do not attempt to swap line voltage wires without proper training and test equipment
