What Does Code 34 Mean?

Status code 34 on the Payne PG95ESA indicates an ignition proving failure. The flame sensor did not detect a flame during the trial for ignition sequence, or the flame was detected but then lost. If a flame signal is lost after the trial for ignition, the control will attempt 3 more trials before locking out and displaying code 14.

During the ignition sequence, the hot surface igniter warms up for a 15-second period, then the gas valve opens and the flame sensor checks for combustion. The flame sensor works by detecting a small electrical current that flows through the flame. When the sensor rod becomes coated with oxidation, this current drops below the detection threshold and the control board interprets it as no flame present.

The most common cause is a dirty flame sensor. Other causes include a closed manual gas shutoff valve, a faulty or cracked hot surface igniter that is not glowing during the warm-up period, gas supply issues, or an improper furnace ground. The PG95ESA manual notes that the grounding electrode must be properly grounded and the flame sensor must be connected for proper operation.
