Payne PG80ESA Error Code 23: Pressure Switch Did Not Open
What Does Code 23 Mean?
Code 23 on the Payne PG80ESA means the pressure switch is stuck in the closed (activated) position even though the induced draft blower has stopped. The pressure switch is designed to close only when the blower is running and creating adequate negative pressure in the heat exchanger. When the furnace shuts down, the switch should open as pressure equalizes.
A stuck-closed pressure switch can indicate that the switch itself has failed mechanically, with internal contacts welded together from repeated cycling. It can also result from a partial blockage in the pressure tubing or the pressure port, which keeps the tubing pressurized even after the inducer stops. In some cases, condensation in the tubing can create a seal that mimics a stuck switch.
A technician will use a manometer to measure actual pressure at the switch, inspect the pressure tubing for kinks or blockages, check the condensate drain for obstructions, and test the switch for proper open/close behavior to determine whether the switch or the pressure sensing system is at fault.

When to Call a Professional
Contact a licensed HVAC technician if:
- A pressure switch that does not open after the inducer shuts down indicates a mechanical failure or blockage requiring professional diagnosis
- Call a technician to test the pressure switch, inspect pressure tubing, and verify condensate drainage
