Payne PG80ESA Error Code Continuous OFF: No Power

TL;DR
Your Payne PG80ESA's control board has no power — the LED is completely off. Check the circuit breaker and furnace power switch first.

What Does Code Continuous OFF Mean?

The Continuous OFF LED status on the Payne PG80ESA indicates that the furnace control board is not receiving any electrical power. The furnace cannot operate in any capacity when the control board is without power.

The control board requires both 115VAC line voltage (at terminals L1 and L2) and 24VAC low voltage (at terminals SEC-1 and SEC-2) to function. If either is missing, the LED will remain dark and the furnace will be completely unresponsive to thermostat calls.

The most common cause is a tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse at your electrical panel. The second most common cause is the furnace power switch being turned off — this is a toggle or light-style switch usually found on or near the furnace. Less commonly, a defective transformer inside the furnace may have failed to supply the 24VAC needed by the control board, or wiring connections may have come loose.

How to Fix It: Check Circuit Breaker and Power Switch

⚠ Safety First
Always turn off the furnace at the power switch or breaker and shut off the gas supply before beginning. Do not proceed if you smell gas — leave the area and call your gas company immediately.

What You'll Need

Steps

  1. Turn off the gas supply valve as a precaution Before investigating, locate the gas shutoff valve near the furnace and turn it to the OFF position (perpendicular to the pipe). Since this is a power issue, you do not need to turn off the electrical breaker yet — but if you smell gas at any point, leave immediately and call your gas company.
  2. Check the circuit breaker Go to your home's electrical panel and find the breaker labeled for the furnace or HVAC system. If it is tripped (in the middle position), flip it fully to OFF, then back to ON. If it trips again immediately, do not reset it again — call an electrician.
  3. Check the furnace power switch Look for a light-style toggle switch on or near the furnace — it is often mounted on the side of the furnace or on a nearby wall. Make sure it is in the ON position. This switch is sometimes accidentally turned off.
  4. Verify the furnace access panel is fully seated Some furnaces have a door safety switch that cuts power when the access panel is removed. Make sure the blower access panel is fully closed and latched.
  5. Restore gas and test Turn the gas supply valve to ON (parallel to the pipe). Set your thermostat to call for heat and check whether the LED on the control board is now lit. A continuously on LED means the control has 24VAC power and is in normal standby.
How to Verify
The LED on the control board should light up (continuous ON means normal standby). The furnace should respond to a thermostat call for heat and complete a full heating cycle.
