Payne PG80ESA Error Code 45: Control Circuitry Lockout

TL;DR
The control board has locked itself out due to an internal circuitry fault or repeated flame failures. It auto-resets after 1 hour, but if the code returns, the board likely needs replacement.

What Does Code 45 Mean?

Code 45 on the Payne PG80ESA is a control circuitry lockout — the integrated furnace control (IFC) board has detected an internal fault in its own logic or sensing circuitry. The board will automatically attempt to reset after a 1-hour lockout period. Cutting power and restoring it can also clear the lockout. However, the status code will repeat until the underlying cause is resolved.

The lockout can be triggered by a flame circuit failure, where the microprocessor detects an inconsistency in the flame-proving circuit that does not match expected behavior. It can also be triggered by a software checksum error in the board's firmware. In some cases, Code 45 appears as a consequence of other repeated faults — if the furnace has cycled through multiple lockouts in a short period, the control board flags its own logic as suspect.

Because this fault originates in the board's internal circuitry, there is no field repair available. If the code clears after the 1-hour reset but returns during normal operation, the board should be replaced by a qualified HVAC technician.
