What Does Code 32 Mean?

Status code 32 on the Payne PG96VTA indicates that the low-heat pressure switch did not close when the furnace called for low-heat, or it reopened during operation. If the switch is open for 5 minutes before ignition or 15 minutes after ignition, or opens during the blower on/off-delay period, the blower will run for the selected off-delay time and then retry.

The low-heat pressure switch monitors the draft created by the inducer motor at low speed. Because the inducer runs slower during low-heat operation, even minor restrictions in the venting system can prevent the pressure switch from closing. This makes code 32 more sensitive to vent issues than codes that appear during high-heat operation.

Common causes include a plugged condensate drain, restricted or blocked vent piping, disconnected or obstructed pressure switch tubing, water trapped in the vent piping from a sagging pipe section, inadequate combustion air supply, excessive wind at the vent termination, or a failed pressure switch. Low inlet gas pressure can also cause this code if a low gas pressure switch (LGPS) is installed.
