Payne PG96VTA Error Code 21: Gas Heating Lockout
What Does Code 21 Mean?
Status code 21 on the Payne PG96VTA is a gas heating lockout. Unlike many other fault codes, the PG96VTA control will not automatically reset from code 21 — the furnace will remain locked out until a technician diagnoses and repairs the fault.
The two causes identified in the service documentation are a miswired gas valve and a defective control board gas valve relay. A miswired valve means the 24VAC signal wires connecting the control board to the gas valve are incorrectly connected, preventing the valve from receiving the proper command signal. A defective valve relay means the internal switching component on the control board itself has failed and cannot reliably open or close the valve circuit.
Diagnosis requires verifying 24VAC is present at the gas valve terminals during the ignition sequence using a voltmeter, and tracing the wiring back to the control board to rule out connection errors before condemning the board. Because this fault involves gas valve operation and requires powered live-circuit testing, the repair must be performed by a licensed HVAC technician.

When to Call a Professional
Contact a licensed HVAC technician if:
- Contact a technician — code 21 will not auto-reset, and the furnace will not heat until the gas valve wiring or control board is repaired
- Do not attempt to bypass the gas heating lockout; the fault indicates a gas valve circuit problem that requires professional diagnosis
