What Does Code 59 Mean?

Code 59 on the Ruud U96VA0702317MSA means the integrated furnace control (IFC) has detected water in the collector box. The U96VA is a high-efficiency condensing furnace, which means it extracts so much heat from combustion gases that water vapor condenses inside the secondary heat exchanger. This condensate normally drains out through a drain line and trap.

The furnace has a water sensor connected to the IFC at connector P4. When water accumulates in the collector box instead of draining properly, a small electrical current passes through the water to the furnace sheet metal. The IFC detects this current flow and triggers code 59 to prevent water damage to internal components.

The most common cause is a clogged condensate drain line or trap. Over time, mineral deposits, algae, or debris can block the drain path. A cracked or improperly installed drain trap, a frozen outdoor drain termination (in winter), or a failed condensate pump (if one is installed) can also cause this fault.
