Fault code A228_F on the Ruud U802VA is a two-stage-only fault (*A228_F) indicating that the relay controlling gas valve 2 — the high-stage gas valve — on the IFC board is stuck open and cannot close. The IFC cannot apply voltage to the high-stage gas valve, so the furnace cannot enter high-fire operation.
On a two-stage Ruud U802VA, the furnace can operate at either low-stage (reduced capacity) or high-stage (full capacity). With A228_F active, only low-stage heating is possible because the high-stage relay cannot energize the second gas valve. In mild weather, this may be adequate, but in cold weather the furnace will be unable to deliver its rated heating capacity.
Unlike A227_F where the welded relay is an immediate safety concern, a stuck-open high-stage relay does not create uncontrolled gas flow — the valve simply cannot open at high stage.
