What Does Code Red 7 Flashes Mean?

Seven red flashes on the Goodman GMEC960803BN control board indicate an external lockout due to excessive retries. The furnace attempted to ignite multiple times but the flame was never successfully detected during the trial for ignition. After exhausting its retry limit, the system locked out to prevent repeated failed attempts.

During each ignition attempt, the control board energizes the igniter, opens the gas valve, and waits for the flame sensor to detect a flame. If no flame is sensed within the allowed window, the gas valve closes and the system retries. After the maximum number of retries, the furnace enters a 1-hour lockout before attempting again.

The most common cause is a dirty flame sensor that cannot detect the flame even though the burners are actually lighting. Other causes include no gas supply (check that the gas valve is open and other gas appliances work), a faulty gas valve, or a front cover pressure switch issue. If you can see the burners light briefly before shutting off, the flame sensor is almost certainly the problem.
