Goodman GMSS960803BN Error Code 8 Flashes: Igniter Circuit Fault
What Does Code 8 Flashes Mean?
Eight flashes on the Goodman GMSS960803BN diagnostic LED indicate a problem in the igniter circuit. The control module detects that it cannot properly energize the hot surface igniter, preventing the furnace from starting the ignition sequence.
Hot surface igniters are wear items that degrade with each heating cycle. The silicon carbide or silicon nitride element gradually develops micro-cracks until it finally breaks, opening the electrical circuit. A typical igniter lasts 3 to 7 years. When the element fractures, the control module cannot pass current through it and logs this fault.
Beyond a burned-out igniter, this code can result from a loose or disconnected igniter wire connector, a poor ground connection at the furnace chassis or burner assembly, or a faulty control module. If the igniter was recently replaced and this code appeared, check that the wire connector is fully seated. A technician can measure the igniter's resistance to confirm whether it has failed.
Common Causes
When to Call a Professional
Contact a licensed HVAC technician if:
- The furnace shows 8 flashes and does not attempt ignition
- The igniter does not glow during startup
- A replacement igniter was installed but the code persists
